New Year’s Wishes

I love the beginning of a new year; it holds so much promise! This reprint is my New Year’s wish for you.

There is power in your words,

they manifest regardless of your intention.

The sounds you make vibrate into the world,

vibrating the surroundings regardless

of how they would like to be.

Take care of your voice, and the words you speak;

that which heals can also wound.

Forgive that which wounds you

for it also may bring healing,

and forgive yourself -

for healing happens in its own time.

Seek not to control the effect you have,

but take responsibility for what you feel.

Receive what life gives you for the lessons it brings;

loving yourself you will not be slain.

And let past pains flow away

so that you may receive the love

that is all there is.

Advent 2nd Sunday

I am sharing this quote I found here. I love the Mennonite Girls Can Cook site for all their great recipes and inspiration and this post touched my heart…I couldn’t have said it better.

Advent wreath

- paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 13

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls,
but do not show love to my family, I’m just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies,
preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime,
but do not show love to my family, I’m just another cook.

If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity,
but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.

If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes,
attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir’s cantata
but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

Love stops the cooking to hug the child.
Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the spouse.
Love is kind, though harried and tired.
Love doesn’t envy another home that has coordinated Christmas china  and table linens.
Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of the way.
Love doesn’t give only to those who are able to give in return
but rejoices in giving to those who can’t.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails. Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost,
golf clubs will rust, but giving the gift of LOVE will endure.

Missing My Son

I don’t usually like to share family pictures on my blog out of a (useless I’m sure) attempt at internet privacy. BUT, I’m so proud of my son I had to share the selfie he posted recently.  Love  love my kids!

Our Education System

Having been an educator for the last twenty-some years, I feel free to say that we are now entering a cookie-cutter model of schooling our kids. Even students with mild intellectual disabilities must take the rigorous on-grade-level state exams when they may be functioning six grade levels below their peers! I see an increase in anxiety and panic over these tests. It is so frustrating for students and also the teachers who now have to teach to the test instead of bringing creativity to the classroom. There…..that is my rant for the quarter.
